RedR Australia
Mandate and operations
RedR Australia (RedR) is a humanitarian organisation that provides training and skilled people to work with communities to plan, prepare, rebuild and recover before, during and after disasters and conflict. We maintain a roster of more than 800 technical specialists across a range of skill profiles including but not limited to information management, humanitarian affairs, education, protection, disaster risk reduction and management. We are a Standby Partner to 14 United Nations agencies and also provide support to frontline relief agencies and governments, including National Disaster Management Offices.
RedR Australia is the only Standby Partner in Southern Hemisphere and specialises in supporting UN partners across the Indo-Pacific region.
RedR Australia is the sole delivery partner of Australia Assists, the Australian Government’s humanitarian civilian deployment capability. We are also part of a RedR International Federation, working closely with RedR India and RedR Indonesia. RedR Australia has multiple international points of presence, including regional offices in Jordan and Suva, and a headquarters in Melbourne, where the SPB portfolio is managed from.
RedR Australia is recognised as a provider of quality training for operational humanitarians around the world. We have a pool of over 70 Associate Trainers. All courses are coordinated by our in-house training team and facilitated by our highly experienced local and international Associate Trainers who have worked for United Nations agencies and a range of humanitarian organisations globally.
Standby Partnerships programme
RedR Australia has been a UN Standby Partner since 2003 and is the only Standby Partner in Asia Pacific and the Southern Hemisphere. We have partnerships with 14 UN Agencies and have been actively involved in the evolution and formalisation of the Standby Partnership Programme over time. RedR contributed to the establishment of the SBP Training Secretariat (TS) through the deployment of two Training Secretariat Coordinators in 2013 and 2019. RedR and DFID also funded the SBP Secretariat Support Function in 2017-18, based out of RedR’s Melbourne Office. These positions delivered important outcomes for the Standby Partnership at large, including building SBP minimum standards for pre-deployment training, providing advisory services to Standy Partners, supporting the creation of the SBP website, mapping partnerships, compiling financial data, and initiating the Duty of Care Working Group. RedR also participated in two joint SBP evaluation missions in 2012 and 2019.
In 2020, RedR Australia is responsible for managing the Standby Partnership Secretariat Pooled Funds, administering the back-end support for the SBP Network Coordinator and MEAL Coordinator, is an active member of the SBP Steering Committee, is a member of SBP Duty of Care working group, and co-chairs the SBP MEAL Working Group. Importantly, this fora brings standby partners, donors and UN agencies together to drive impact, accountability and sustainability at the global multilateral level.
